Business Access Language Solutions

Bio A lifelong student of language and culture, I am blessed to bring my passion for language access to my job as Executive Director of Access Language Solutions. My Spanish-speaking journey started when I went back to college to earn a Bachelor's degree in 1987. Language study was required and I was thrilled to start learning Spanish in the classroom. I was soon on my way to completing a minor in the language which included a semester abroad in Valencia, Spain. A year after earning my Bachelor's of Arts degree I spent the summer at Middlebury College in Vermont in their 7-week language immersion program. I headed to Madrid, Spain in August of 1991 to teach English in an after school academy. Two years later I was enrolled at the University of New Hampshire and earned a Master's of Arts degree in Spanish Literature in 1995. After teaching Spanish at the college level and spending a year as an AmeriCorp VISTA Volunteer in Lowell, MA, I relocated to Lexington, KY where I spent four years teaching middle and upper school Spanish at Sayre School. A chance encounter led to a volunteer medical interpreter placement at Saint Joseph's former Mobile Clinic. I was hired in September of 2001 by Saint Joseph Hospital to coordinate their Language & Cultural Services Department. By October of 2001 I had earned a 40-hour entry-level medical interpreter certificate (Bridging the Gap) and in 2016 I became a nationally certified medical interpreter through the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters. In 2017 I founded Access Language Solutions, a non-profit language services provider based in Lexington, KY. Our clients include fellow non-profits, local government, medical/dental/orthodontic offices, workman's compensation clients, immigration clinics, legal offices, and Social Security Disability. I am also a founding member of the Kentucky Interpreter & Translator Association (formerly the South Eastern Medical Interpreter Association).
