Bio Jennifer is in her 4th term as the 11th District Councilmember for Lexington Fayette Urban County Government. Jennifer is passionate about serving Lexington and helping make it a better place to live for everyone. She is also a qualified Spanish/English interpreter and has worked as an independent contractor interpreter on and off for 12 years. Currently, she chairs the City Council’s standing committee of Social Services and Public Safety, serves on General Government and Planning, and Budget, Finance, and Economic Development committees. Some of the items she cares about, or has put in committee, include the paramedicine program, a review of code enforcement, police issues, corridor improvements, the sale of cats and dogs, park improvements, addressing homelessness, gun violence, and language access. Jennifer serves on the Board of Health and helped bring Covid testing sites to Cardinal Valley. She worked fervently during Covid to make sure that testing and vaccinations were available to those in need, worked hard getting Covid information out in Spanish, and to assure there were food drives in the 11th. She rallied volunteers who made masks for senior living facilities in the district. She also coordinated with different groups including working with the Mayor’s and Governor’s Offices. She won several awards for her work throughout the pandemic. During her time on Council, Jennifer made sure that the first phase of the Versailles Rd Corridor Improvement Project was brought to fruition and secured money to continue the project, advocated for High St safety measures and the Leestown Rd New Circle Rd improvement project and helped secure money for Distillery District area improvements. She is currently working in committee on a maintenance plan to be included in infrastructure projects. She has worked a lot with the Latinx, Hispanic, and international communities since living in Lexington and as the 11th District Councilmember since the district has a large Spanish-speaking and international population. She was the first Councilmember to put all communication from her office in both English and Spanish. She worked to get the city’s website translated in many languages. She has been the chair of the Mayor’s International Affairs Advisory Commission. Prior to her time on Council, she worked in the non-profit sector, was a professional ballet dancer, and instructor, studied anthropology and Latin American culture and religion, worked and lived in Central Mexico for several years, ran an outreach program in the 11th District, and owned a successful business. Serving on Lexington’s City Council has been her favorite endeavour yet, and it feels like a continuation of her career in outreach work.
