Bio For the past seven years, I have been involved in a volunteer ministry in the Burlington, Vermont Swahili community. This involves visiting the local Swahili speaking people at their homes and teaching them in their language. I have also conducted reading and literacy lessons in the Swahili language. During these lessons, I teach the fundamentals of the Swahili alphabet. I also correct reading and grammar mistakes made by my student showing my ability to recognize and correct spelling and grammar mistakes. I attend two weekly Swahili meetings with native Swahili speakers in the area and we often stream lectures from Africa. At these meeting I regularly write and translate talks and then present them before an audience. I also assist other learners to translate their written thoughts from English to Swahili. I also regularly assist those in the community with other translation related tasks such as summarizing documents, audio messages, or any other means of communication from English to Swahili, and Swahili to English. By means of this extensive training through immersion I have a great understanding of not just the language, but the culture as well, and can adapt my translation to fit the audience addressed. I also collaborate with a translation team based in Kenya/ Tanzania and have been assisting with video editing and legal translation. This involves using programs such as Audacity Video Viewer, DaVinci Resolve, and a specialized program created by the organization to produce subtitles, and revise machine translations of audio recordings. I also regularly utilize Microsoft Teams as well as Microsoft Word, in order to communicate with my translation team and edit shared documents.
