COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this 1-hour performance-based webinar, participants will review the fundamentals of simultaneous interpreting and learn a structured practice approach to develop this skill. Medical encounters often move quickly, requiring interpreters to shift between modes without disrupting communication. This session emphasizes techniques for strengthening simultaneous interpreting skills to support accuracy, flow, and smoother transitions between interpreting modes in clinical settings.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Define simultaneous interpreting and its uses in medical interpreting.
2. Identify how to strengthen simultaneous skills through anticipation, multitasking, and active listening exercises.
3. Practice anticipation and multitasking skills using realistic medical encounter scenarios.
4. Outline a structured 3-month practice regimen to improve simultaneous interpreting skills.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Marisa Rueda Will, CHI is a CCHI Commissioner and served as a Mayo Clinic Spanish Interpreter from 2006-2026. She became a Certified Healthcare Interpreter-Spanish in 2012, and a licensed interpreter trainer through Cross-Cultural Communications in 2017. In 2020, she became a simulation center instructor. She is a member of the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care Webinars Work Group. She has provided interpreter training workshops for the NCIHC, CHIA, and ATA. Marisa is currently getting her Master’s in Interpreting Studies at Western Oregon University. Her company, Tica Interpreter Training and Translations, focuses on training and educating novice and advanced medical interpreters, based on real-life patient experiences. marisa@ticatnt.com
