Labor of Love: Obstetrics Medications Explained for Language Professionals

This 1-hour asynchronous course guides language professionals through essential terminology, medication use, and real-world interpreting scenarios in labor and delivery settings. You’ll explore common interventions—including pain management options, labor induction agents, and postpartum medications—while learning how to interpret accurately and confidently in fast-paced, high-stakes birth encounters.

Why Take This Course?

Interpreting in labor and delivery settings demands more than just medical vocabulary—it requires quick thinking, clarity, and clinical awareness. You may be called to interpret complex discussions around preeclampsia, the induction of labor, or the use of cervical ripening agents like misoprostol. This course helps you break down the medications and terminology most commonly used during childbirth, so you can support clear, confident communication between providers and patients during some of the most intense and meaningful moments in healthcare.

What You’ll Learn

  • The most commonly used medications in labor and delivery, including Pitocin, misoprostol, epidural anesthetics, magnesium sulfate, and postpartum uterotonics
  • How each medication works and when it is typically administered
  • What terms like effacement, dilation, and station mean in clinical context
  • Access to a glossary of obstetric terminology in English and Spanish, with select bilingual terms discussed during the session
  • Application of these concepts in realistic interpreting scenarios involving full-term, preterm, and high-risk births

What’s Included:

  • A 1-hour recorded webinar presented in an engaging, easy-to-follow format, followed by a 5-question multiple-choice quiz
  • A certificate of completion (requires a 100% score on the quiz—retakes allowed)
  • Downloadable resources, including the full slide deck
  • A 200-word glossary of obstetric terms in English, Spanish, and LOTE

Who Should Take This Webinar?

This session is ideal for:

  • Medical interpreters and translators working in OB/GYN, labor and delivery, or prenatal care settings
  • Language professionals seeking to strengthen their understanding of perinatal terminology and improve accuracy in childbirth-related encounters
  • Interpreters preparing for certification or seeking CEUs for renewal
