Abstract
Surgical procedures often involve a wide range of medications that are critical for both patient safety and successful outcomes. This webinar, Surgery Medications: Sliced and Diced for Language Professionals, is designed for interpreters and translators who support patients in surgical settings. Participants will explore terminology and communication challenges related to anesthetics, analgesics, anticoagulants, and other common medications used before, during, and after surgery. Through real patient stories and interpreting practice activities, attendees will gain both the technical vocabulary and the practical skills necessary to navigate high-stakes medical encounters with confidence.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Identify different types of anesthesia.
2. Visualize preoperative anesthetic procedures.
3. Anticipate preoperative instructions regarding medication management.
4. Integrate knowledge based on context through stories and scenarios.
5. Practice interpreting skills tested on the CCHI E-to-E exam.
About the Speaker
Marisa Rueda Will is a CCHI Commissioner, Certified Healthcare Interpreter-Spanish, and has practiced as a medical interpreter for nearly 20 years. She is a licensed trainer for Cross-Cultural Communications and has delivered workshops for organizations such as the ATA, CCHI, CHIA, and NOTIS. Marisa is the founder of Tica Interpreter Training and Translations (Tica TNT) and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Interpreting Studies at Western Oregon University. Her training programs blend storytelling with practical skill- building to prepare interpreters for professional success.
