This training for interpreters of all levels of experience to learn how to self-assess their skills, (by recording themselves and analyzing error types, and then choosing appropriate drills and practice material to “move the needle”).
CEUs: 1.5 CE hour with CEAP-CCHI, NBCMI and 0.15 IMIA/NBCMI
Learning Objectives:
Learn how to self-assess interpreting skills via self-recording and tracking of error types
- What are the most common interpreter errors?
- How does one track personal errors?
- Which drills and exercises should be selected for each error type?
- Stress and interpreting and its effect on performance
This workshop is for both novice and experienced interpreters to learn how to self-assess their own skills, and how to design skills and drills practice to improve performance. This presentation is geared towards working interpreters, showing them how to assess their own interpreting skills for strengths and weaknesses. Techniques for how to improve performance on the job and self-assessment will be shared.
Skill building exercises in the form of interactive group activities focusing on speed, memory, focus attention forms the bulk of the interpreter practicum. Links to additional practice drills and skill building videos are provided. Suggestions for how to utilize these resources in the measurement and assessment of oneās progress will be shared. Attendees will be shown how to set-up a metrics worksheet for tracking their progress and skills improvement over time.
This webinar fulfills the skill-based requirements for CEAP/CCHI certification.
About the Speaker:
Eliana Lobo is a Portuguese healthcare interpreter, a trainer of trainers for interpreters and language access professionals, and an adjunct professor of healthcare interpreting at Highline College in Washington State.
Nationally certified as a CoreCHI-PTM Portuguese healthcare interpreter, Washington State DSHS medical interpreter, and a Certified Trainer of Trainers (ToT) of medical interpreters.
Formerly a Spanish/Portuguese translation supervisor, medical trauma center interpreter services Supervisor and Trainer, National Director of interpreter quality for a Language Service Provider, and a Portuguese and TEFL certified language teacher.
Eliana served as a CCHI Commissioner from 2015-2021. Currently serving a second term as an NCIHC Board member, Chairing the Standards & Training Committee, and voice hosting the STC podcast, āInterpreting in Healthcareā, Eliana has volunteered with the āHome for Trainersā webinar series of the NCIHC for over a decade, helping to create and produce over 60 national webinars on effective medical interpreter training.
