Fundamentals for Healthcare Interpreters:  HIPAA and the NCIHC Confidentiality Tenet

Date: June 26, 2024
Time: 7:00 – 8:30PM EST

CEUs: 1.5 CE hour with CEAP-CCHI, NBCMI and 0.15 IMIA/NBCMI

Most of those working in the healthcare field in the US need to be aware of, and abide by, HIPAA, the
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Although those interpreting in healthcare are no
exception to HIPAA’s purview, variances exist regarding credentials needed to “be in compliance with
HIPAA” based on level of training and form of contracting/employment. This webinar will address those
variances, including how foundational medical interpreter training that covers in-depth the NCIHC’s
confidentiality tenet and standards of practice, as well as HIPAA, fulfills compliance requirements. A Q&A
segment will follow the presentation to allow for specific case scenario discussion.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the intersectionality between HIPAA and the NCIHC Confidentiality Tenet
  • Distinguish requirements between contracted medical interpreters and staff medical interpreters
  • Engage in professional self-assessments to foster compliance and accountability

Complying with the HIPAA Privacy Rule applies to most of those who work in healthcare in the US. In the
case of those who interpret in medical settings, both the training requirements and obligations related to
HIPAA, as well as how HIPAA relates to the NCIHC confidentiality tenet, may be confusing.

Do interpreters need to be “HIPAA certified” in order to “be in compliance” to interpret in healthcare?
Or is being a qualified or certified medical interpreter enough?
And how can interpreters know?

Attend this webinar to find out the answers to the above questions and more. A Q&A segment will follow
the presentation to allow for specific case scenario discussion.

This webinar fulfills the skill-based requirements for CEAP/CCHI certification.
